project goal,

to build a metallic structure designed to connect two buildings and to act as a motor lobby for the complex.

the main spine was a 70 meters long, continuous curve, fabricated in 500 pieces of strategically cut steel tubes ranging from 10” to 2” diameter. these were manufactured off-site in our workshop, where we gave them the curvature needed to fulfill the project’s geometry, as well as the pipe fitting needed to create smooth connections.

given the complexity of the connections between the tubes that form the structure, a custom script was developed to automatize the extraction of fabrication documentation; the script takes as inputs the curves that represented the elements of the structure, and automatically generates not only the volumetric model, but also allows us to extract the cutting profiles necessary to facilitate the assembly of each piece with its intersecting complements. Each piece had to be cut with a particular profile in order to allow a proper assembly in its assigned place, so one of the script´s outputs was an unrolled plane of each intersection that could be printed and rolled around the tubes as a template to proceed to the cutting process.
